Published online this week, I am honored to be among contributors to the free, open-access CENSE Almanac 2021, in the lead-up before the Acoustic Ecology Week Linz conference.

Text with images of trees, a bird in flight, and people walking in meadows, woods and in silhouette against a cloudy sky.

Dedicated in memory of R. Murray Schafer (1933-2021), Canadian composer, author, music educator, visual artist, and creator of acoustic ecology, five questions were presented to us, the contributing authors. They concern my personal attitude to acoustic or sonic ecology(ies), the relationship between the disciplines, genres, and practice of activism, science, and the arts, the role of field recording in these relationships, and what may motivate the broader public and policymakers in making real changes for a better of quality of life and environment. The responses to these questions may suggest strategic approaches for future efforts.

The Central European Network for Sonic Ecologies (CENSE) was founded in 2019, following the first international Conference of the Central European Society for Soundscape Ecology 2018.
